Help us protect our little corner of paradise, Bora Bora.
The Biorock program, launched in 2010, aims at the rehabilitation of coral reefs and marine life in the lagoon.
Bora Bora and French Polynesia's other islands are not as badly affected as other tropical islands in the world, thanks to wastewater treatment that guarantees water quality in the lagoon. However, our coral reefs have suffered greatly from several factors: tourism development, the red tide phenomenon in 2002, a tsunami in 2005, an invasion of killer starfish (Acanthaster) since 2007, and a cyclone in 2010. As a result, Conrad Bora Bora Nui decided to get involved in the marine fauna preservation effort.
We support local initiatives for the conservation of coral biodiversity. The resort launched its Biorock program with Espace Bleu and its director Denis Schneider, who has more than 10 years of experience in this field, and the support of the Global Coral Reef Alliance, an American foundation headed by Professor Tom Goreau of University of Maryland.
Electrolytic Mineral Accretion is a technology that has already proven its effectiveness in Indonesia and the Maldives. It is considered to be the best technique to fight coral mortality, as it increases coral resistance tenfold and boosts regrowth and natural repopulation.
The first step of our program was the installation of a turtle-shaped structure, which you can see by the pontoon of the Upa Upa Lounge Bar.
