Beverly Hilton, 1959
Beverly Hills, CA
This is where it all began. The 1st Annual GRAMMY Awards dinner ceremony was held on May 4th, 1959 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. That night, the Grand Ballroom gave away 28 inaugural GRAMMY Awards, but featured a constellation of talent including The Everly Brothers, Perry Como, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. Not a bad start.
Hilton Istanbul, 1959
By the late 1950s, jazz had become a global phenomenon. In April 1959, the legendary Louis Armstrong and his All Stars traveled to Istanbul, Turkey as part of a European tour that included three concerts. The first two of these concerts were held at the Saray Theater on April 10th and 11th, followed by a final performance by "Ambassador Satch" on April 12th in the Hilton Istanbul ballroom.
New York Hilton, 1971
New York, New York
Beyond his legendary "Bed-In For Peace" honeymoon with Yoko Ono at the Hilton Amsterdam in 1969, the link between John Lennon and Hilton extends into songwriting. The original hand-written lyrics to John Lennon's 1971 #1 hit single Imagine were penned on a piece of Hilton New York stationery, which now has a home in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex in New York City.
Hilton Hawaiian Village, 1973
By the time he visited Hawaii in 1973 for his "Aloha from Hawaii" concert, the island paradise of Hilton Hawaiian Village® Waikiki Beach Resort had become a favorite destination for rock and roll icon Elvis Presley. Whether he was on location for a concert, film or vacation, the King called the Ali'i Tower's Mahele Presidential Suite on the 14th floor of the Ocean Tower (Ali'i Tower) home.
Ali'i Tower Mahele Hotel, 1997
On his way home from touring Europe and Asia in 1997, Michael Jackson was asked to add Hawaii as a final stop of his tour. The Prince of Pop chose the exotic Hilton Hawaiian Village® Waikiki Beach Resort and stayed in the Ali'i Tower's Mahele Presidential Suite, the very same suite that was occupied by Elvis decades earlier. Jackson's January 4th performance at the Aloha Stadium on Oahu would be his last U.S. concert.
The Drum Room, 1941
Kansas City, Missouri
In the 1930s and 40s, Kansas City had become the "cradle of jazz" in America and a destination for touring musicians including Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Patsy Cline. One look across the drum shaped bar at the Drum Room and it was clear why the Hilton President Kansas City hotel was where anyone who was anybody came to be seen, and heard.
